Hello friends! I'm cutting right to the chase since this post is all about quick and simple. I want to share an easy project I did to spruce up our wooden blanket chest for the holidays.
We've had this chest for 20 years now. It sits in our front entry right next to the front door and usually looks like this:
To holiday it up, I used a scrap piece of fabric large enough to cover the seat, a red scarf, and a scrap piece of white fluffy trim. I layered the polka dot fabric on top of the cushion first, then folded the red scarf in half and centered it on the bench like a table runner, then centered the white trim on top of the scarf. You could run it vertically or horizontally, whichever way you like. I folded the ends under the chest cover like how you would wrap a present and taped it to the inside of the bench cover with painters tape. For the back, I tucked the excess fabric behind the bench so it wouldn't show. Here's a view from the inside of the cover:
The tape job doesn't have to be pretty since it's on the inside. If it doesn't stick well, you could try duct tape. I didn't try it so don't know how that would work, but seems reasonable if your fabric isn't too delicate.
It reminds me a little of Santa's suit without screaming "Santa!" (said in my best Buddy the Elf imitation). Never mind that I've never seen a polka dot wearing Santa Claus before, but hopefully you understand my vision. :)
Once Christmas is over, I can easily remove the holiday fabrics and have the chest back to what it was before. I love quick, simple, and free!
I think one of my projects in 2013 will be to update this chest again. I seem to do that every 4-5 years with this piece. Paint? New fabric? I kind of like the polka dots on here. Ooh, the possibilities! Another project to dream about...

What a clever way to change the look of the blanket chest and the hall that it is in then to cover it with different fabric that reflects the season!!! I love it!!! I really like that you used painters tape so that the fabric could be used over again for something else. So very clever!!! I followed you back from the Aloha blog hop. Have a Simply Heavenly day!!! :):)
ReplyDeleteGirl! You're so creative and I love the ease of this seasonal update. That's the beauty of fabric, it can be changed and updated so easily. I love how you show the not so pretty underside of the bench. Some people might try to hide that, but you keep it real girl!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a great weekend in spite of all that has happened. I keep dreaming for a world where we live in peace, joy, love and harmony. Someday,..
