10 Favorite Painted Dressers: Looks to Inspire

10 Favorite Painted Dressers: Looks to Inspire

I'm looking for inspiration for the dresser I bought off Craigslist back in January for our master bedroom makeover. It's been sitting in my garage and this past weekend I rolled it out and started prepping it for paint. Here's what it looks like right now before doing anything to it (minus a couple of the handles that I had already started removing):

The dresser was refinished at some point, and poorly at that. There are heavy drip marks, the stain is unevenly applied, and even the sheen of the topcoat is applied unevenly. I'm pretty sure someone was drinking heavily when they refinished this piece. There are also chips and dings and a missing piece towards the back on the top that I'll be repairing. I appreciate wood furniture, I really do, but this piece is getting painted. Debate all you want about how painting a vintage piece borders on the sacrilegious, but I think if it's a wood that doesn't necessarily look good, and you like painted furniture, and it's in YOUR house, you should do what you want with it. There are some pieces that I think should keep its beautiful wood finish and be properly restored, but this isn't one of them. Sometimes a paint job is the kind way to make a piece of furniture that might be destined for the landfill serve its function for a good while longer.

I've been looking for dresser inspiration for a couple months now, and here's my round-up of 10 painted dressers that are among my favorites I've seen around the web. They're not all DIY dressers, but they could be with a little imagination:

This turquoise color and finish is stunning. It's bold but still looks so elegant in its surroundings. I love everything about this piece AND this space:

This platinum paint finish is so chic. It's from Z Gallerie but with all the available paint now, this kind of look could be achieved:

Two tone dresser with wood and white. I remember seeing this last summer when Kate at Centsational Girl posted this and thinking how smart and modern it looked. I don't really like the wood grain on my dresser drawers enough to keep it a wood tone though, but I love the idea of it. Rick likes this one too:

Okay, I LOVE this two-tone white and black dresser. It is so stylish:

I like the aqua color with the glazing on this dresser:

Black damask painted dresser. So dramatic!

This next one is so bright and bold. Normally we might assume this would go in a little girl's room, but I think with the right design, you could make this work in an adult space. This would look so great against the gray walls in our bedroom. I am so drawn to this color! Rick, on the other hand, may not be:

I could go classic with black paint or a super dark stain like my bloggy friend Nancy did with this piece (she transforms all sorts of pieces over at her blog Artsy Chicks Rule, go visit her!) This is always a sophisticated look:

White is always a classic beautiful choice too, and so fresh, like this dresser:

But look at this colorful one using chalk paint. Love the fuschia cherry blossoms. What a great color combination! Ohhhhh!!

So many great choices! Now I've got to make a decision on the color and get paint for my own dresser. Which one do you like the best? I know which one (or two) I'm leaning toward. Can you guess? :)

Update: The dresser is done! Come and check it out here. I like it!

  1. The last one!!

You seem to really like the turquoise ... but are also drawn to the bold/beautiful hot pink. Paint your dresser turquoise (glazed or not, depending on where it's going & how it'll be used) with a glam pop of the glorious hot pink!

Can't wait to see what you decide!!

  3. I'm no help because I like all of them! I love the style of the top two drawers. I'm completely with you on painting over wood. I can't wait to see what you decide!

  4. Ok, I love the turquoise one from Classic Causal Home because that is one of my favorite colors. I also love the pink one as that is another one of my favorite colors. To be honest, I sort of like the modern two-toned white and wooden one as well. It's very modern and clean looking. I'm thinking you're going to go with the black and white one to go with your new sultry room? Am I right?
I doubt that Rick would go for the turquoise or pink one.
I really can't wait to see what color you come up with as well as the finished product. I know it will be amazing and something that I can't even envision right now. You're uber talented my friend!
Ok, I'm laughing because you have a Room and Board ad on your website and Room and Board is here right now setting up Eli's loft bed. I'm a bit scared as this is a totally new bed for them and these guys that are installing it have only done so once before! I hope they get it right because my little guy is going to be sleeping on it! Fingers crossed!
I hope you feel better soon. I sent you some white light to heal your chest cold!
    xoxo, Jackie

    2. I totally stole the instagram button idea from you! So much better than what I had told you about before, keepin' it simpler. :)

I will say, you have gotten to know my style pretty well. The ones you mention are among my top choices. That's all I'll say. :) Rick saw the pink one and said, "uh, no". I knew he wouldn't but I just love it. I knew you would too being a pink girl and all, especially that hot jewel tone pink!

How exciting for Eli to get his new bed! Those ads I think pick up on your cookies in your computer so it must picked up you were looking at Room and Board. Right now my ad says "Great Wolf Lodge" because I'm working on two state conference we're having there in May! It's a little scary that our computers are getting this smart.

  5. Thanks so much for including my little guy up there! ;) That was a great thrifty find! :)

I love color and you have such great choices up there ..... My thoughts are: I love the aqua/turquoise for a splash of color but if that's too much for your hubby maybe a nice crisp white with some colorful turquoise accessories.
OR....white with wood drawer fronts like Cent Girl's. But with a very dark stain like on mine.
or....just go with turquoise. ;) lol
